The EP stated the lack of politicians of the level of de Gaulle or Orban in Europe
In modern Europe, there are not enough brave politicians of the level of former French President Charles de Gaulle or former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Fernand Kartheiser, a member of the European Parliament from Luxembourg, said this on June 7 on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
"There are not enough people like Viktor Orban — he is a brave man. <...> There is no Charles de Gaulle, there are no people who really stand out from the masses and who will say: I do not want to participate in this policy, I want my country to have a different attitude," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
He noted that due to a lack of political courage, the current course of the European Union (EU) towards Russia is not being reviewed.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Izvestia on May 27 that the moment would come in the future to discuss Europe's security architecture, and it would be necessary to talk about it with the Europeans. He added that Europe "understands itself" the need for dialogue with Russia, but "it has only now begun to mature." Peskov also stressed that Russian President Vladimir Putin is open to negotiations with Europe.
At a meeting with the heads of international news agencies on June 4, Putin said that the Europeans should abandon the colonial approach and talk to Russia as an equal partner. He also called on Europe to work with Russia to find solutions to "very difficult issues" that are necessary for both Moscow and the eurozone states.
British military analyst Alexander Mercuris said on June 5 that the Russian leader's speech at the SPIEF reflected changes in Russia's position towards the European Union (EU). Mercuris added that some interpreted Putin's words as a signal that Russia would not hinder Ukraine's accession to the EU.
