The development of the global economy at the moment is similar to the plot of the ancient Greek myth of Pandora's box. This opinion was expressed by Igor Sechin, Executive Secretary of the Presidential Commission for the Development Strategy of the Fuel and Energy Complex and Environmental Safety, speaking at the XXIX St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

"A year ago, we compared the development of the global economy to the dangerous and unexpected journey of Odysseus. Today, in my opinion, another ancient Greek myth is a more relevant parallel — the myth of Pandora's vessel, which brought diseases, disasters and suffering to people," Sechin said during his speech with the key report "The Beginning of the End or the end of the Beginning: what remains at the bottom of Pandora's Box" on the Energy Panel.

Describing the prospects for the development of the situation in the global energy and economy, Sechin quoted British Prime Minister Winston Churchill as saying in 1942: "This is not the end yet. It's not even the beginning of the end. But perhaps this is the end of the beginning."

In his opinion, the so-called "rules-based order," where the "rules" were dictated by an unquestionable hegemon, collapsed as a result of the actions of its creator. Sechin quoted US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who said that if the rules are not backed by real force, then they are not worth the paper they are written on.
