- Ritter pointed to the balancing act of the United States between supporters of Kiev and the search for a path to peace
The current US leadership has made improvements, unlike the administration of former White House chief Joe Biden, on the issue of diplomatic relations with Russia, but US President Donald Trump has to balance between supporters of helping Ukraine and finding a way to peace. This was stated on June 5 by former US Marine Corps intelligence officer Scott Ritter in a conversation with Izvestia correspondent Anton Zolotnitsky on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
"President Trump... He can't speak with one voice representing all of America. There is a Congress. As you know, Congress has just passed a resolution authorizing additional military assistance to Ukraine. And the president cannot ignore it. This is a political reality," Ritter explained.
According to the expert, the American government faces a very difficult challenge — Congress regularly votes for continued military support for Ukraine, while Trump himself is looking for a potential path to peace.
The Associated Press reported on May 22 that a group of U.S. senators from both parties is calling on Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth to accelerate the allocation of $600 million in aid to Ukraine and U.S. allies in Eastern Europe. It is noted that we are talking about $400 million for Ukraine and another $200 million for the defense programs of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
According to a statement by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on June 3, the United States intends to transfer military assistance in the amount of $400 million to Ukraine in the near future as part of a package that was previously approved by Congress.
