Avtodor announced the construction of an eight-lane highway from Moscow to Smolensk

Russia continues to develop high-speed roads in the Moscow region, including routes to Minsk and Kaluga. This was announced to Izvestia on June 5 by the chairman of the Board of the state-owned Russian Highways company (Avtodor). Vyacheslav Petushenko at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2026).

According to him, they plan to bring the highway to Minsk almost to the border of the Smolensk region.

"In the Moscow region, which is not part of this high-speed frame, we will bring the highway to Minsk to the border of almost the Smolensk region. Now there will be a magnificent eight—lane road there," Petushenko stressed.

The head of Avtodor also spoke about the development of the Kaluga highway. It is noted that part of the work in this area was completed in 2025, and the remaining section is planned to be completed by the end of this year. Petushenko added that the main goal of such projects is to make roads convenient for residents and industrial enterprises.

"The most important thing is that residents of our country and industrial enterprises can use our roads. And the most important thing is to save time," Petushenko explained.

In addition, expressways are built wide, without traffic lights and intersections at the same level, to ensure faster and safer travel.

"And there are many more projects in the portfolio that we are currently developing," Petushenko concluded.

On the same day, Petushenko said that Russia continues to form a framework of high—speed highways - from St. Petersburg through Moscow to the Black Sea coast and further to the east of the country. Thus, one of the key tasks is not only to extend high—speed routes, but also to connect industrial and tourist clusters in the country's regions to them.
