- The German politician pointed to the collapse in the European economy due to the confrontation with Russia
The confrontation with Russia is disrupting the economy not only in Germany, but throughout Europe. This was announced to Izvestia on June 4 by Joerg Urban, a German politician and head of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in Saxony, as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2026).
"We see that the confrontation between Europe, between Germany and Russia is so tense that it will greatly disrupt our economy. Not only in Europe, but especially in Germany. <...> We must restore relations, good relations, as soon as possible," he said.
According to the politician, Germany is currently experiencing major economic problems, which are not only related to the confrontation with the Russian Federation. Urban noted that at the moment, Germany is not as strong a country as it has been for a long time.
In particular, he noted that confrontation with Moscow is not in the interests of Berlin. According to Urban, the government of German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz is doing exactly the opposite of what the country needs.
"Germany cannot express its geopolitical interests, we very often fulfill the interests of other countries. This is especially true of the confrontation with Russia.: it is not in our interests," Urban stressed.
On May 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted the faster growth of the Russian economy compared to European indicators. According to him, Russia's GDP has grown by 10.3% in three years. At the same time, Europe's GDP grew by only 0.4% in 2023, 1.1% in 2024, and 1.5% in 2025.
