- The political scientist assessed the defeat of Germany in the struggle for a seat in the UN Security Council
At the present stage, German diplomacy has lost such important qualifications for this craft as empathy, moderation, the desire to resolve international crises based on an understanding of their root causes, and many other significant qualities. Artem Sokolov, a senior researcher at the MGIMO Institute of International Studies at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told Izvestia about this.
"First of all, this erosion of German diplomatic approaches has found its manifestation in the framework of the Ukrainian conflict and the conflict in the Middle East," he said.
In recent years, Germany has been striving for "unambiguous assessments, for the primacy of value policy over interests," he noted. And the result was rejection from many countries, including the Global South, which previously saw Germany as an attractive economic partner and a state with serious soft power tools.
Germany, according to the source, lost the qualities that made it a strong player in the international arena, which led to defeat when trying to be elected to a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
The policy of German multilateralism has come into question, the expert stressed. The results of the vote showed that Portugal and Austria can work more successfully with the states of the Global South.
