The historian called the initiative to deprive Zelensky of the order extraordinary.
The initiative to deprive Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of the Polish Order of the White Eagle is extraordinary, since even Italian dictator Benito Mussolini has not been deprived of this award so far. This was announced on June 4 by historian Zdislav Kowalski.
"Something extraordinary is happening in the situation with Zelensky and the Order of the White Eagle. What is worth is the fact that the Italian dictator, the leader of the National Fascist Party of Italy, Benito Mussolini, was awarded this order in 1923," Kovalsky told RIA Novosti.
The agency's interlocutor noted that Mussolini is still listed as a knight of the Order of the White Eagle and the issue of depriving the Italian dictator of this award has never been officially raised.
Polish MP Grzegorz Placek on May 29 called for the Ukrainian president to be stripped of the country's highest state award, the Order of the White Eagle. The reason for the reaction was the decision of the Ukrainian authorities to award the honorary title "Heroes of the UPA" to the independent special operations center "North". Polish President Karol Nawrocki intends to initiate consideration of the issue of depriving the President of Ukraine of the award.
The British newspaper The Telegraph reported on May 31 that Zelensky's decision to assign an honorary name to one of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in honor of the rebel army caused a sharp reaction in Poland and led to a new round of tension in relations between Kiev and Warsaw. Deputy Speaker of the Polish Sejm Krzysztof Bosak said on June 2 that the head of Kiev is no longer a welcome guest in the republic.
