Rospotrebnadzor has ruled out the risk of Ebola being imported to Russia
There is currently no risk of the Ebola virus spreading or being imported into Russia. This was announced on June 4 by Natalia Pshenichnaya, Deputy Director for Clinical and Analytical Work at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor.
"The Ebola situation remains tense in the DRC. There is currently no risk of Ebola being imported and spread in Russia," Pshenichnaya told RIA Novosti.
According to her, to assess and minimize risks, specialists monitor the epidemiological situation around the clock using the Perimeter system. In addition, sanitary and quarantine control at checkpoints across the Russian state border has been strengthened.
Pshenichnaya clarified that the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor developed a diagnostic test system as soon as possible, which allows detecting a new variant of the Bundibugio virus. She added that the laboratory base of Rospotrebnadzor is provided with a sufficient number of test systems for the diagnosis of Ebola.
On May 15, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared an Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda. On May 24, Reuters reported that 900 possible cases of infection had been identified in the DRC as part of measures to combat Ebola. Later, on May 25, WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the deaths of 220 people in the DRC since the outbreak of Ebola.
On May 25, Yulia Minakova, an infectious disease specialist, associate professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology at Siberian State Medical University, reported that the first symptoms of Ebola are very similar to the flu. According to her, the disease is quite severe and has a high probability of death.
