- Ex-MP of Moldova called the European Union the reason for Moldova's bad attitude towards Russia
Moldova has taken a course against Russia on instructions from Brussels, but the citizens of the country do not support this direction. This was announced on June 3 by Marina Tauber, a former member of the Moldovan parliament.
According to Tauber, Moldova is actually governed by the European Union (EU) through President Maia Sandu, which makes it impossible for the country to choose its own foreign policy course. She stressed that the country is experiencing an economic downturn and an increase in the debt burden due to its orientation towards the EU.
"You have to be an absolute ignoramus not to understand the benefits of cooperation with Russia in the energy sector, in the field of sales markets," Tauber said in an interview with Izvestia on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2026 (SPIEF).
The ex-MP also pointed to the interference of the authorities in Gagauzia and the restriction of freedom of local leaders, such as the head of Gagauzia, Yevgenia Gutsul. Tauber noted that the people support their positions. She compared the EU's methods of pressure with the "Hitlerite" ones aimed at suppressing alternative opinion.
Tauber also noted that Moldova's orientation towards the EU has led to poverty and social problems that had not previously been observed in the country.
On June 3, former President of the Republic and leader of the opposition Party of Socialists Igor Dodon expressed the opinion that Moldova would not be able to survive without economic cooperation with Russia. He explained that if Moldova imports resources from the EU, "there will be no chance" because their cost will be too high.
CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev told Izvestia on May 29 that Moldova had sent a note to the Commonwealth withdrawing from the main association agreements, but was going to remain a party to more than 100 economic treaties. According to him, the exit procedure will take a whole year. During this time, a special group will analyze over 200 agreements in which Chisinau participates.
