- Scientists have recorded the most powerful solar flare in a month and a half
The Sun has seen its strongest flare in the last month and a half. This was reported on June 3 in the Telegram channel of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the IKI RAS.
"An M9.3 level flare was registered on the Sun at 04:36 Moscow time, which, according to catalogs, is the strongest since April 24, 2026, when two explosions of the highest level X occurred during the day," the report says.
Laboratory experts noted that about 7% of the recorded outbreak was not enough to reach the threshold of the highest class X. The increase in activity began in the middle of the previous day.
The astronomers also pointed out a mathematical pattern of current events: explosions occur in increments of about seven hours, while their intensity is constantly increasing. According to these calculations, the next energy release may exceed level X, although physical models estimate the probability of such a scenario at only 3%.
The flare was localized almost in the center of the solar disk. Scientists explained that with this location of the epicenter, plasma clouds are directed directly to the Earth. At the same time, the IKI RAS clarified that at the moment the controls do not confirm the actual plasma release, so the current phenomenon is still characterized as harmless.
The situation in the center of the system began to change after a period of low activity, when the flare graph resembled a straight line. The last time explosions of comparable strength were recorded was at the end of April, when two high-power events occurred in the Sun during one day. The researchers continue to monitor the dynamics of the processes throughout the day.
On June 2, the Institute of Applied Geophysics reported that an M1 flare was recorded on the Sun.2. Its duration was five minutes. Later, a flash of the penultimate power class was recorded on the Sun.
