- Estonia has announced the impossibility of speeding up the passage of the border with the Russian Federation in Narva
Currently, there is no way to reduce the time required to cross the Estonian-Russian border through the Narva-1 checkpoint. This was announced on June 3 by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Estonia Igor Taro.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs [of Estonia] recommends not to travel to Russia, and we fully support this recommendation. The fewer people and fewer goods traveling to Russia, the faster the border crossing takes place," the ERR portal quoted him as saying.
According to the Interior Minister, the long queues at the border checkpoint in Narva are a consequence of the conflict in Ukraine and the tightening of customs control in Estonia. He stressed that additional measures are needed to curb the importation of sanctioned products into Russia.
According to Taro, opening additional checkpoints or checking bus passengers will not solve the problem, as they will require the distraction of employees from Narva and may further slow down the work of the main checkpoint.
On May 24, the head of the Narva border checkpoint, Regina Kukk, said that the Estonian Border Guard recommends not using Google Maps when traveling along the Narva River due to the risk of accidentally crossing the border with Russia. According to Kukk, this season the situation is complicated by the lack of navigation buoys in Narva, as Estonia and Russia have not been able to coordinate their placement. In recent months, at least four cases of illegal border crossing have been recorded. In some situations, warnings were issued to violators, in others fines of up to €600 were imposed.
