Reached the set: Andreeva reached the semi-finals of Roland Garros again
Mirra Andreeva defeated Sorana Kirstu and reached the 1/2 finals of Roland Garros for the second time in three years. The 19-year—old Russian did not leave any chances to an experienced opponent: she won the first set in 22 minutes, and the entire match in less than an hour. In the semifinals, Andreeva will play with Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, who recently won the super tournament in Madrid. Our other tennis players, Anna Kalinskaya and Diana Schneider, will play their matches on Wednesday, June 3.
Andreeva vs Kostyuk — who's the favorite
Until recently, 36-year-old Kyrstya announced plans to retire after the current season, but in 2026 she gained such a shape that she may well stay on the tour. The Romanian tennis player won the title in her native Cluj-Napoca, reached the semifinals of the thousandth in Rome and reached the quarterfinals of Roland Garros for the first time in 17 years. The previous time at this stage, she played just at Andreeva's age.
Moreover, Kirstya completed all meetings at the current tournament in Paris in two sets, and in the third round she completely beat Argentine Solana Sierra with two "steering wheels".
"The season is going much better than I expected,— Sorana said at a press conference. — When I started my last year on the tour, I wanted to finish my career beautifully and show good tennis, but I didn't think that everything would go so well. I'm really enjoying the game right now. Over the past few years, I've realized how much I love this sport. At the moment, I have not changed my decision to retire. To be honest, I'm not thinking about it yet. Of course, we will assess the situation over time, but for now the decision remains the same.
On clay this season, Kirstya won 14 of 18 matches, including defeating Arina Sobolenko and Elena Ostapenko, and comfortably placed in the top twenty of the WTA rankings. However, Mirru had not previously won — in personal meetings, the Russian led 1-0. Their first game took place recently, in the quarterfinals of the tournament in Linz. Then the rivals spent more than two hours on the court, and Andreeva nevertheless won a tense match in three sets. Mirra won that tournament in the end.
Andreeva is in great shape right now — in addition to the title in Austria, she reached the finals in Madrid and the semifinals in Stuttgart. The Russian is the WTA leader in the number of wins on clay in the 2026 season. In addition, this is Mirra's third consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros. In the previous match of the tournament, she defeated Gilles Teichmann in less than an hour and a half and defended last year's ranking points. Therefore, I approached the meeting with Kirsty without undue pressure.
Andreeva immediately got down to business and made a break in the first game. In general, the tennis players did not force the events: for some time they got used to the conditions of the game under the roof closed due to bad weather and delayed the draws. However, Mirra adapted faster and produced one of her best sets of her career. She actively moved along the back line, managed to catch almost all the balls and regularly caught the Romanian off guard with swinging shots. In the third game, the Russian increased her advantage, and scored two aces in a row on her next serves. Kirstya couldn't do anything against her opponent — it took Andreeva only 22 minutes to win with the steering wheel in the first game.
At the beginning of the second set, Sorana still took her first game. Although it was not easy for her at all: Mirra exerted serious pressure, but the Romanian turned out to be stronger in two key draws. The game leveled off a bit, which was obviously welcomed by the local fans, who did not want to leave the arena so quickly. Kirstya felt more confident, but Andreeva was not at all embarrassed by this.
Who will Diana Schneider play with?
The Russian woman continued to enchant. With the score 2-2, she earned a double break point with a sumptuous shot - unexpectedly for her opponent, she handled a low ball and executed a non—threatening cut right over the net — and took the lead. Kirsty didn't give up and finally made the long-awaited break in the next game. However, she could not impose a full-fledged struggle. Andreeva then regained the lead, after which she took her serve to zero.
The outcome of the meeting was already clear: all Mirra had to do was bring the game to its logical conclusion, and she decided not to delay. In the final games, Andreeva completely dictated the pace and drove the Romanian around the court with powerful precise strokes. In total, the tennis players spent 57 minutes on the court.
"It was one of my best matches of the tournament," Mirra admitted after the match. — I didn't expect it to be like this. It started right in the warm-up: I didn't miss a single ball there. I was even scared: would it be like this during the game? It's good that everything was fine during the match, too. This year, the fans didn't cheer so much against me (last year, in the quarterfinals with Frenchwoman Lois Boisson, the audience booed the Russian tennis player). But if that had happened, I think I would have handled it better now, I would have understood better how not to let it affect me.

Mirra will play Marta Kostyuk, who is on a streak of 16 consecutive wins, to reach the finals. The Ukrainian won the titles in Rouen and Madrid, and lost only two sets at this Roland Garros. Kostyuk leads Andreeva 2-0 in personal meetings, including beating the Russian in the recent Madrid final. However, if Mirra consistently serves the first ball (as in the match against Kirsty) and can keep it away from Marta's powerful forehand, then chances of success will appear.
The other semifinal pair will be determined on June 3. Russian Diana Schneider will face world number one Arina Sobolenko. This will be their first face-to-face match. In the other quarterfinals, our compatriot Anna Kalinskaya will face Maya Khvalinskaya. The Polish tennis player has reached such a high stage of qualifying. In seven matches in Paris, she has lost only one set and poses a great danger.
