It is dedicated to the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the RSFSR and is an official non-working day. Concerts, exhibitions and patriotic events are held throughout the country in honor of the holiday. Read about the history, traditions and main symbols of the celebration in the Izvestia article.

What kind of holiday is "Russia Day" and why is it celebrated on June 12?

Russia Day is one of the youngest state holidays of the Russian Federation. It was established in memory of the signing of the Declaration on State Sovereignty of the RSFSR on June 12, 1990.

"This document marked the beginning of our new history, the history of a democratic state based on civil liberties and the rule of law. And its main meaning is the success, prosperity and well—being of citizens," Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a reception in the Kremlin on the occasion of Russia Day in 2001.

Initially, the holiday was perceived as a kind of reference point in the modern history of the country. But over time, June 12 became a symbol of patriotism, solidarity and unity of the peoples of Russia.

How Russia Day appeared: the history of the state holiday

On June 12, 1990, the first Congress of People's Deputies of the RSFSR adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the RSFSR. Internal political and economic reasons contributed to the adoption of the document.

The Declaration became the basis for drafting the country's Constitution. It proclaimed the priority of the Constitution and laws of the Russian Republic over the legislative acts of the Soviet Union, affirmed equal rights for all citizens, political parties and public organizations, and established the principle of separation of the main branches of government — legislative, executive and judicial.

Exactly one year later, on June 12, 1991, the first nationwide open presidential elections were held in Russia, which were won by Boris Yeltsin. The Supreme Council of the Russian Federation established June 12 as a non-working day by decree of June 11, 1992. In 1994, Boris Yeltsin signed a decree declaring June 12 a public holiday, the Day of the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Federation.

It was first celebrated in 1995. At the same time, the Kremlin hosted a solemn ceremony of awarding the state prizes of the Russian Federation in the fields of science and technology, literature and art. This tradition still exists today.

Why was Russia Day called something else before

Initially, June 12 marked the Day of the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the RSFSR. In everyday life, the cumbersome official name was often shortened to Independence Day, although it is not mentioned in any document.

In 1998, Boris Yeltsin proposed in his televised address that the holiday be renamed Russia Day. However, it was legally fixed only in February 2002, after the adoption of the new Labor Code of the Russian Federation.

Traditionally, Red Square becomes the main venue for festive celebrations. In the afternoon, concerts with performances by famous stars take place on Vasilyevsky Descent. The program ends with a large-scale fireworks display. Sometimes airshows are also held in honor of the holiday. For example, in 2003, the aerobatic teams "Swifts" and "Russian Knights" delighted Muscovites with their performance.

But the largest celebrations took place in Moscow in 2015 and 2016. On June 12, 2015, 220 festive events were held in the capital, attended by 450 thousand people. Most of the concerts, relay races, competitions and contests were held in city parks. For example, the festival of new Russian music Motherland was held in the Muzeon Art Park.

Since the holiday falls during the summer season, most of the activities are carried out on the main streets and in park areas, where fairs of regional goods are also taking place. Museums, libraries, and parks host historical exhibitions, lectures, themed quests, and open-air film screenings. In addition, one of the main features of the holiday is educational ethnic events in the regions of the Russian Federation, as well as festivals of national cultures.

What do the symbols of Russia Day mean?

The main symbols of Russia Day are the national flag, the coat of arms and the anthem of the Russian Federation.

The Russian flag is also called the tricolor. There is no official interpretation of the colors of the Russian flag in the legislation. According to one common interpretation, white is associated with peace and purity, blue — with loyalty and constancy, red — with courage and strength.

The national coat of arms of Russia depicts a double-headed eagle with a scepter in its right paw and a power in its left. He embodies the unity of the peoples of our vast country, located on two continents at once — in Europe and Asia. The eagle's head is crowned with two small crowns, above which there is one large one — in the popular interpretation, this is a reflection of the three branches of government. On the eagle's chest is a shield with the image of a horseman (St. George the Victorious), which symbolizes the victory of good over evil and the defense of the Fatherland.

The national anthem is a musical and poetic symbol of the country, embodying its sovereignty, unity and independence. The words for the Russian national anthem were written by Sergei Mikhalkov, and the music was composed by composer Alexander Alexandrov. There is a certain order of performance of the anthem: those present are required to listen to the anthem standing, men — without hats. If the flag is raised during the performance of the anthem, then you need to turn to face it.
