The European Union will consider imposing sanctions against senior Israeli officials after the harsh detention of activists of the pro-Palestinian flotilla Sumud. This was reported on June 1 by Politico newspaper with reference to the draft document of the upcoming EU summit.

"EU countries will be asked to support sanctions against Israeli politicians accused of violating the rights of foreign activists detained as part of a flotilla trying to reach Gaza," the publication says.

According to the newspaper, the ambassadors of the unification countries will for the first time discuss the possibility of imposing restrictions on members of the Israeli government on June 18-19. The reason for the discussion was the incident with the interception of the ships of the Sumud flotilla in international waters, during which Israeli security forces used force against the detainees.

According to an unnamed EU official, the final verdict will be made after consultations with all member states of the union.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barraud announced on May 20 that Israel's ambassador to France, Joshua Zarqa, would have to arrive at the republic's Foreign Ministry to provide explanations in connection with Ben-Gwer's publication of a video humiliating pro-Palestinian activists of the Sumud flotilla.

Prior to that, on May 18, the Foreign Ministers of Turkey, Bangladesh, Brazil, Indonesia, Spain, Colombia, Libya, Maldives, Pakistan and Jordan condemned the Israeli attacks on the Global Sumaud Flotilla.
