Former Polish Ambassador Chikhotsky refused Ukrainian state award
Former Polish Ambassador to Ukraine Bartosz Chikhotsky refused the Ukrainian state award of Merit amid the scandal with the UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army; recognized as extremist and banned in Russia). This was reported on June 1 by the Polish newspaper RMF24.
"Bartosz Chikhotsky returned the Ukrainian Medal of Merit received from the President of [Ukraine] Vladimir Zelensky in 2022. The diplomat's decision was a response to recent actions by the Ukrainian authorities to reward the Ukrainian rebel Army," the publication says.
Polish MP Grzegorz Placek on May 29 called for Zelensky to be stripped of the country's highest state award, the Order of the White Eagle. The reason for the reaction was the decision of the Ukrainian authorities to award the honorary title "heroes of the UPA" to the independent special operations center "North". Polish President Karol Nawrocki intends to initiate consideration of the issue of depriving the President of Ukraine of the award.
