Former Greek national football team player Ikonomou has died at the age of 33
Former defender of the Greek national team and a number of Italian clubs Marios Ikonomou died in hospital after a traffic accident. This was reported by Kathimerini newspaper on June 1.
"Football player Marios Economou has died. The 33-year—old football player died in the intensive care unit of the Ioannina University Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for the past few days after a car accident," the publication says.
It is specified that the football player was hospitalized after he collided with a truck on a motorcycle on the central street of Ioannina in northwestern Greece.
Marios Ikonomou played for the Greek national team from 2016 to 2018, playing six matches.
At the club level, the defender is known for his performances in the Italian Serie A and other European championships. He played for such teams as Bologna, Sampdoria, Cagliari, SPAL, Bari, as well as Greek AEK and Danish Copenhagen.
