Six countries are in danger of total extinction due to the collapse of the Doomsday Glacier. This was reported on June 1 by the Daily Express (DE) newspaper.

"A huge glacier the size of Great Britain threatens to separate from Antarctica, as a result of which some countries will be in danger of total extinction," the publication notes.

According to the newspaper, the world's widest glacier is under the close supervision of climatologists because of its potential to dramatically affect sea levels in the world. It is noted that the glacier contains enough ice to raise the sea level by more than 60 cm if it completely melts.

It is noted that one of the countries that is most at risk of flooding due to rising sea levels is the United Kingdom. Another country is the Netherlands and densely populated cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, which are largely located below sea level. Some regions of the United States are also at risk of flooding.

In addition, almost 70% of Bangladesh's territory is located at an altitude of less than 1 m above sea level. Also, by 2100, more than 90% of the Maldives will be under water. The island nation of Tuvalu, with an area of only 26 square kilometers, is also in danger of disappearing completely from the world map.

Robert Larter, a marine geophysicist at the British Antarctic Survey, said in an interview with the popular online scientific publication Live Science on May 29 that the shelf barrier of the Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica, known as the "Doomsday Glacier," could collapse as early as this year. According to him, its destruction is likely to lead to its remoteness and possible complete fragmentation.
