The director of the NPP announced the risk of loss of the power unit after the Ukrainian Armed Forces strike

A drone strike by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) on the engine room of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant could lead to the loss of a power unit. This was announced on June 1 by Yuri Chernichuk, director of the ZAES.

"Such a drone, despite all its danger and all its power, will certainly not be able to emit radiation," he said in an interview with the Vesti news agency.

According to Chernichuk, the drone fell a few meters from the wall of the reactor compartment, but the distance to the reactor itself remained considerable. He stressed that such a drone is not capable of directly causing the release of radiation, but any strikes on facilities at the nuclear power plant could potentially lead to a radiation accident.

The Director of the NPP explained that the danger is associated not only with possible damage to the reactor, but also with a chain of consequences that can disrupt the operation of the plant's critical infrastructure and eventually lead to the release of radioactive substances into the environment. In his opinion, in the worst case, the consequences of the attack could lead to the decommissioning of the power unit due to the impossibility of its restoration.

On May 30, Ukrainian militants launched a targeted attack on the hall of power unit No. 6. The situation was promptly reported to the IAEA staff. On May 31, the Ministry of Defense reported that the damage caused by the attack of Ukrainian drones was located only 10 m from the reactor compartment.

Chernichuk noted that the Kiev regime has turned the employees of the NPP into the main target of its attacks, seeking to destabilize the situation at the facility and bring the staff to psychological exhaustion. Renat Karcha, an expert on atomic energy, a deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the Zaporizhia region, pointed out that the attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces was deliberately leading the situation to a nuclear incident and wanted to blame Russia for this.
