Mendel noted the willingness of Ukrainians to meet with the bear instead of sending them to the front.

Yulia Mendel, the former press secretary of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, said on May 31 that Ukrainian men of military age are more afraid of getting to the front line than meeting a wild bear.

"Why do grown men climb trees to escape? <...> A citizen prefers to take a risk by meeting a bear rather than deal with his own government," she wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
