The IAEA experts had to take shelter during the inspection of the Zaporizhia NPP due to the reappearance of Ukrainian drones and the operation of the air defense system. This was announced on May 31 by the agency's press service.

"During the detour, the team was ordered to take cover after the sounds of drones and shooting at them were heard nearby," the IAEA reported on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

On the same day, Russia's permanent representative to the international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, announced that the IAEA experts had begun an inspection at the nuclear power plant. During the inspection, they recorded damage to the exterior of the engine room building.

The day before, Ukrainian militants launched a targeted attack on the hall of the NPP power unit No. 6. The situation was promptly reported to the IAEA staff. On May 31, the Ministry of Defense reported that the damage caused by the attack of Ukrainian drones was located only 10 m from the reactor compartment.

Igor Semenovsky, a political scientist and associate professor at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, noted in an interview with Izvestia that the Ukrainian Armed Forces strike was connected with Kiev's attempt to divert attention from corruption scandals in the country. In turn, Renat Karcha, an expert on atomic energy, a deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the Zaporizhia region, pointed out that the Ukrainian Armed Forces' attack on the nuclear power plant shows that the Kiev regime is deliberately leading the situation to a nuclear incident and wants to blame Russia for this.
