Flight Global: The Cosmonautics Museum helps create a game about conquering the universe
The Russian studio Ninsar Games, together with the Museum of Cosmonautics, is working on a sci-fi role-playing game Saturn. Legacy". The project should be one of the first Russian attempts to tell about the achievements of Soviet and Russian cosmonautics through the format of a modern video game. The developers hope to make the history of space exploration more understandable and interesting for a young audience, as well as to show their own vision of Russia's technological future.
The cosmos of the future in a game format
The action of the game "Saturn. Legacy" is set in 2067. According to the authors, Russia is becoming one of the key participants in the exploration of the Solar System, and players get the opportunity not only to complete the story campaign, but also to get acquainted with the achievements of Russian science and cosmonautics through the built-in interactive museum.
— It is important for us that the fantastic world of Saturn. Heritage" was based on the real achievements of Russian science and cosmonautics. Therefore, we are cooperating with the country's largest space museum in working on the project. Its specialists help preserve historical authenticity, advise the team on issues of the Russian space program and saturate the game world with facts related to key stages of space exploration," Ivan Orlov, the project's PR director, told Izvestia.
In his opinion, this approach makes the game informative, showing Russia's contribution to the development of space technologies through a modern interactive format. And the main task of the developers is not only to create another sci-fi game, but also to create an attractive image of the Russian space future, which it would be interesting to immerse yourself in and live it together with the characters.
"This is not just a backdrop for an adventure, but a full—fledged universe that shows how the development of Russian science and the space industry can be in a few decades," said Orlov.
Both the real Russian space industry and fictional structures will play a significant role in the game world. According to the plot, Roscosmos participates in the exploration of deep space together with the fictional ARKA corporation. Together, they are developing technologies for terraforming and colonizing various objects in the Solar system — from the Moon and Jupiter's moon Callisto to Saturn's moons Enceladus, Iapetus and Mimas.
— Many game technologies are based on real modern developments and organizations. Players will be able to find references to Russian enterprises and design bureaus in the descriptions of weapons, equipment, and various objects in the game world. It is important for us to show continuity between today's achievements and the future that we are trying to imagine," explained Ivan Orlov.
The developers also included mentions of famous Russian scientists and space explorers in the game. Among them are Sergey Korolev, chief designer of the Soviet space program, Mikhail Marov, one of the leading Russian researchers of the planets of the Solar System, Viktor Glushkov, founder of Soviet cybernetics, and Valentin Glushko, creator of rocket engines.
The authors pay special attention to the artistic component of the project.
— We are not consciously striving for photorealism. Our goal is to create a visual style that will be recognizable and relevant even years after the release. At the same time, the story itself is based on the best traditions of Russian science fiction and youth literature, offering players the opportunity to influence the development of the plot and make meaningful decisions," added Orlov.
The collaboration of the Museum of Cosmonautics with Ninsar Games is not the first such experience. Earlier, he signed an official cooperation agreement with Lesta Games Group of Companies. As part of this partnership, various themed events have been held in the World of Ships and World of Tanks games since April 2025.
The editors also sent a request to the Museum of Cosmonautics with a request to comment on their participation in the creation of Saturn. Legacy".
An ambitious experiment
Experts note that "Saturn. Heritage" is noticeably different from most domestic game projects in its attempt to combine entertainment and educational content.
- "Saturn. Legacy" looks like one of the most ambitious Russian RPG projects of recent years. The developers did not just make a continuation of the first part, but actually change the genre formula: instead of isometry, they switch to a first-person view, expand the scale of the story and offer interesting mechanics with the transfer of consciousness between humans and combat robots. The combination of stealth on Earth and a full—fledged combat RPG on Saturn's moons is particularly interesting," said Arkady Smirnov, a video game expert.
If the studio manages to implement the stated variability of the passage and the role-playing system with the influence of the hero's background on the plot, the game can become a significant event not only for the Russian, but also for the international indie market, he believes. At the same time, some experts urge not to draw far-reaching conclusions yet.
"So far, the project has aroused cautious interest rather than unconditional optimism," IT specialist Sergey Pomortsev told Izvestia. — The developers claim a large number of mechanics: open and hidden passage scenarios, a deep role-playing system, robot customization, tactical battles and a large-scale sci-fi plot. However, it is precisely such ambitious promises that often become a problem for small studios. In addition, the transition from a tactical isometric RPG to a first—person game is a serious challenge both in terms of development and the expectations of the audience of the first part.
Pomortsev believes that the real prospects of the project will become clear only after the appearance of a full-fledged gameplay and a demonstration of how the stated ideas work together, and do not exist only at the conceptual level.
The project does not have an exact release date yet, but the developers plan to show an introductory version of Saturn. Legacy" in 2027.
