The number of confirmed Ebola deaths in DR Congo and Uganda has reached 43
The death toll from Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda has risen to 43 people. This was announced on May 31 by the Director General of the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Afrcia CDC) Jean Kaseya.
According to him, 263 cases of Ebola have now been officially confirmed in the two countries. About 1.1 thousand more alleged cases are being investigated by experts, Kaseya wrote in an article for the Financial Times.
Yesterday, Alan Gonzalez, Deputy Director of Operations for the international organization Doctors Without Borders, noted that the situation with the spread of Ebola in Africa can be described as extremely alarming. He said that the response to the epidemic has not yet kept pace with the rapid spread of the disease.
On May 15, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared an Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda. On May 24, Reuters reported that 900 possible cases of infection had been identified in the DRC as part of measures to combat Ebola. Later, on May 25, WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the deaths of 220 people in the DRC since the outbreak of Ebola.
On May 25, Yulia Minakova, an infectious disease specialist, associate professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology at Siberian State Medical University, reported that the first symptoms of Ebola are very similar to the flu. According to her, the disease is quite severe and has a high probability of death.
