The French authorities have requested a meeting of the UN Security Council in connection with the Israeli military operation in Lebanon. This was announced on May 31 by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barraud.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier that day instructed the Israeli army to expand the operation against Hezbollah and strengthen control over the movement's territories. He also said that over the past month, the Israeli military has killed 700 Hezbollah soldiers, and 3,000 since the start of Operation Roaring Lion.
