Armenia named a condition for calculating the choice between the EAEU and the EU
For Yerevan to think about the choice between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the European Union (EU) prematurely, until "the issue comes to an end." This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia Mher Grigoryan in an interview with the Vesti news agency, which was published on May 31.
"When it comes to the fact that this issue will come up, then there will be specifics with this issue," he said.
He added that in this case, Armenia will be ready to "conduct stress tests." Now the authorities in Yerevan simply do not consider such a scenario.
On May 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin, responding to a question from Izvestia, stated that if Armenia were to adopt the economic standards of the European Union (EU), integration processes with the republic would have to be curtailed. He warned that upon withdrawal from the EAEU, Armenia would lose access to free trade agreements, and its citizens would need to acquire patents to work in the Russian Federation.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, meeting with Putin on April 1, said that Yerevan is aware of the incompatibility of membership in both the European Union and the EAEU, but he believes that these agendas are still compatible. The Armenian Prime Minister added that the country will continue its ambivalent policy until it reaches a critical point at which it will be necessary to make a decision.
