The expert reported on the lengthening of the growing season of trees in Russia
The growing season of trees in Russia — from spring to autumn — is noticeably increasing against the background of global climate warming. This was announced on May 30 by Evgeny Banaev, Head of the Dendrology Laboratory and chief researcher at the Central Siberian Botsad of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"Elongation is the earlier onset of some spring phases (budding, beginning of flowering) and the later onset of autumn phases (leaf coloring). At least, we have now carried out work on the Far Eastern maples, and this is being observed. The shift has been going on for about two or even three weeks," he told RIA Novosti.
The scientist noted that the lengthening of the growing season of plants is associated with an earlier onset of spring amounts of positive temperatures necessary for the start of their active development, which indicates a softening of the climate in a number of regions of Siberia.
According to him, warming is observed not only in Siberia, but also in other regions, including St. Petersburg, where temperatures are rising to about two degrees. He added that the air temperature had changed noticeably.
The scientist also pointed out that after the 2000s, the phenological rhythms of plants are increasingly mixed: if earlier bird cherry, apple and lilac bloomed sequentially, now their flowering periods often overlap each other.
Science Daily magazine reported on May 18 that scientists from the University of New South Wales in Australia have discovered the plant Ptilotus senarius, which was considered extinct for almost 60 years. The discovery was made possible by a random photo posted on the iNaturalist citizen science platform. It is noted that it has not been found in the wild since 1967.
