A discussion has broken out in the United States about a secret program of intelligence agencies that allegedly search for extraterrestrial DNA in the databases of popular genetic services 23andMe and Ancestry. Most Russian scientists consider such research to be fiction, but American astrophysicist Avi Loeb claims that it has scientific value, as it can theoretically confirm hypotheses about the extraterrestrial origin of mankind. President Donald Trump, as promised, is gradually declassifying the classified data of the Pentagon and other agencies on unidentified phenomena. According to experts, the topic of aliens is used by a politician for quite mundane purposes. For example, to distract the public from the war with Iran and raise their rating.

Alien DNA Search

The American media is actively discussing information about an allegedly secret CIA program to search the databases of popular genetic services Ancestry and 23andMe for carriers of "alien DNA." Jason Georgani, a writer, PhD, and former lecturer at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, was the first to report this on one of the podcasts. After that, the mysterious research was discussed from the pages of newspapers, online publications and on the airwaves of many TV channels. According to the informant, in this way the special services are trying to find representatives of the alien race who secretly live among humans.

—The CIA wants to track them down,— Jason Giordani said.

The writer named former serviceman Lin Buchanan, who took part in secret intelligence programs, as his source. He said that CIA analyst Christopher Green, who, according to media reports, actually once worked in the secret service, allegedly developed a hidden method of accessing information from companies that perform DNA tests on saliva.

Despite the fantastic nature of the story, prominent scientists joined the discussion. Avi Loeb, a professor at Harvard University and head of the Galileo project for the search for extraterrestrial life, told Izvestia that such studies are of scientific interest, as they can confirm the extraterrestrial origin of humanity.

— DNA analysis can help establish the origin of the human species, which may have arisen as a result of panspermia (the scientific hypothesis that life was brought to Earth from outer space. — Ed.), — he said.

According to him, for example, DNA may contain markers indicating the transfer of primitive life forms, for example, from Mars to Earth. However, it hardly makes sense to look for aliens on our planet: special genetic engineering is required for biological creatures to travel across interstellar distances. Such journeys—even at the speed of light—will take tens of thousands of years. They are very dangerous due to cosmic ray bombardment and low gravity. Just as humans cannot live on the surface of Mars or the Moon, neither can aliens on Earth, the scientist explained.

The genes are at the disposal of the special services

As a Russian geneticist who wished to remain anonymous told Izvestia, there have already been precedents in history when special services used genetic research data for their own purposes or hunted for their results.

— Ancestry and 23andMe companies have been around for over 15 years. They are designed to identify genotype features, for example, to diagnose pathologies or to search for relatives. Or maybe there are other goals that we don't know about. What they have the right to do and what they don't is periodically changed by regulators. These databases were publicly available, and there are many cases when intelligence agencies used it," the scientist said.

Mass genetic screening can help identify the common ancestor of humans, which will answer the question of the origin of mankind. However, the specialist does not know about any reliable cases of DNA detection that may have an alien origin.

The topic of mysterious genes, the origin of which is unknown, has already surfaced in the scientific community. In October 2025, scientist Max Rempel published a study analyzing 581 family genomes. The specialist found sequences in the DNA of 11 families that did not match the parental genes and whose origin cannot yet be explained. However, the scientist himself said that the results of the experiments were preliminary and required further confirmation.

According to Denis Kuzmin, director of the Phystech School of Biological and Medical Physics at MIPT, panspermia is quite a scientific hypothesis that scientists are working on. But it has nothing to do with genetic research.

— Molecular panspermia (the cosmic origin of organic precursors) is well confirmed by data from the analysis of the composition of meteorites and asteroid samples. In terms of the transfer of life itself, it remains an open and verifiable hypothesis, the main way to verify it is to search for an independent second sample of life in the Solar system and analyze interstellar bodies. Cosmochemistry and astrobiology can help here. Mass genetic screenings of people have nothing to do with this verification: humanity's kinship is a consequence of Earth's evolution and says nothing about the cosmic origin of life," he said.

The idea of alien DNA is absolutely not scientific and has not been confirmed by any facts, said Pavel Volchkov, head of the Laboratory of Genomic Engineering at MIPT.

— Currently, the data of genetic services is not publicly available, but they can be obtained on request. But looking for alien genes there is like looking for mammoths. And this will be a more realistic option, because it is a closer form of life to humans," he said.

Why does Trump need aliens

The search for alien intelligence remains an important issue on the American political agenda. President Donald Trump, as promised, is gradually declassifying information from the Pentagon and other agencies about unidentified phenomena. At the moment, two portions of materials have been released, including evidence from astronauts on lunar missions about mysterious moving objects, as well as more modern audio and video recordings.

It is noteworthy that the "alien question" arose in the situation of a sharp drop in Donald Trump's ratings due to the war with Iran. According to recent polls, only 35% of Americans support him, while over 60% express clear disapproval. Military actions against Iran have caused a wave of discontent among the residents of the United States.

For US citizens, the conflict with Iran has affected their daily lives in the first place. For example, in a Reuters poll, 64% of respondents said that rising gasoline prices are hitting the family budget hard. Since the beginning of the war, fuel prices have risen by 50%. If at the end of February the average price was $3 per gallon, then in May the average rose to $4.5.

It is important to understand that in the USA, a car is in many cases a basic necessity. The country has been developing for decades around the automotive infrastructure: people settled in single-storey areas at considerable distances from each other. A job could be in one place, a supermarket in another, a school in a third, and medical facilities in a fourth, and there were often dozens of kilometers between them. Now many families have two or more cars. Therefore, the rise in gasoline prices in the United States remains a sensitive issue for a significant part of the population.

Congressional elections will be held in November 2026, and the Republican Party has low chances of winning. In such a situation, Trump is naturally trying to raise ratings, including using "cheap" methods, Konstantin Blokhin, a leading researcher at the Center for Security Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Izvestia.

— There are several topics in the USA that are very popular. The first is who killed Kennedy, the second is UFOs and Area 51, and the third is the September 11 mystery. At the same time, Trump wanted to declassify materials on all these topics. Besides, he's a narcissist and likes to be talked about all the time, no matter how," the expert noted.

The United States is a country of massive conspiracy theories, and of all kinds, added Dmitry Drobnitsky, an American political scientist. According to him, ufology is an invention of the United States. Many in the country really think that "the truth is somewhere nearby." And in recent years, there has been a growing demand for this topic in American society. In addition, there are rumors among Americans about a secret government that allegedly hides "something" from citizens. It was this part of society that voted for Donald Trump, partly because they were not satisfied with liberal socio-economic policies.

In general, the topic of aliens can become a convenient tool for the American authorities to manage public attention during a period of internal crises and falling confidence in the elites.
