EAEU leaders called for a referendum on EU membership in Armenia
The leaders of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) countries are calling for a referendum to be held in Armenia in the near future on joining the European Union (EU) or maintaining membership in the Eurasian union. This was stated on May 29 in a joint statement by the heads of state.
Earlier in the day, Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, responding to a question from Izvestia columnist Viktor Sineok, said that the Armenian side had not requested a separate meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss topics related to the republic's participation in the EAEU.
Prior to that, on May 27, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that the decision on further membership in the EAEU or joining the EU would be made by the citizens of the country. He noted that his key task is to ensure the possibility of choice for the population.
