Vladimir Golubev, President of the Russian Cynological Federation, told why a dog can bite guests by the legs.

In an interview with Radio 1 on Friday, May 29, the specialist noted that this situation is unpleasant, especially if it involves a large pet, but the reasons for this behavior are not always related to fear or poor parenting. According to him, it is important to understand the nature of the animal in order to correct its behavior correctly.

He explained that a dog can show a herding instinct, perceiving the movements of guests as chaos and trying to "direct" them by biting their ankles. In puppies, this behavior is often associated with play and an attempt to attract attention, and with insufficient socialization, bites can be a reaction to fear or overexcitation. The reason may also be the protection of resources such as food or toys.

The expert stressed that it is impossible to punish the dog, as this increases stress. Instead, it's important to teach basic commands and calmly stop behavior, such as temporarily isolating a pet. He added that it is necessary to work with the reason: to socialize the dog, give it a sufficient load and engage in games in advance. At the same time, guests should also follow the rules — do not frighten the animal with sudden movements and remember that for the dog they are in a foreign territory.

In May, Vladimir Golubev explained why a dog wags its tail when it growls. The expert noted that the combination of different signals in a dog is a normal phenomenon: emotions can overlap, and a tail does not always mean friendliness.
