Andrey Bobrovsky, a nutritionist and Candidate of medical Sciences, told us by what signs it is possible to understand that sprats are spoiled.

In an interview with Radio 1 on Friday, May 29, the expert explained that when choosing sprats, it is important to pay attention to the condition of the jar: it should not be swollen or springy, and there should be no rust on the seams. Also, according to him, it is worth checking the expiration date and smell after opening — an acidic, putrid or pungent chemical aroma should alert.

He added that the liquid in the jar should also be evaluated: if it is cloudy, foaming or bubbling, the product should not be consumed. At the same time, the expert emphasized that taste is not a reliable indicator of quality, since spoiled food can look and smell almost normal. In addition, he recommended not storing sprats after opening in a tin can.

In April, it became known that Russia had established a new GOST for canned fish, which will enter into force in February 2027. According to the new GOST, the mass fraction of table salt in canned food will have to be from 1.2 to 2%. At the same time, it is necessary to salt future canned food evenly.
