Ukraine reports on dialogue with the EU on the return of its citizens

Kiev and Brussels are in dialogue on the issue of a "painless and gentle" return of Ukrainian refugees from the European Union (EU) to their homeland, Natalia Naumenko, head of the State Migration Service of Ukraine, said on May 29.

"Today we are talking with many European politicians, with many European services, they are all looking for ways to develop a program for the return of Ukrainians to Ukraine in a fairly gentle and painless way, because they also understand that it is very important for us to return our own citizens," the Country's Politics Telegram channel quotes her as saying.

The head of the migration Service also noted that Ukraine is interested in creating "all conditions for citizens to return" to their homeland.

Naumenko also reported on May 21 that EU countries are submitting a large number of requests for the return of Ukrainian refugees to their homeland. She noted that requests are submitted under the readmission procedure, an agreement between countries on the return of citizens without legal grounds for stay. On May 19, the EU Special Representative for Ukraine, Ilva Johansson, called for the right of Ukrainian citizens of military age to be denied the right to asylum in Europe.

After that, on May 25, Naumenko said that the number of deportations of Ukrainians from the European Union has been gradually increasing since 2024. The grounds for expulsion from the European Union may be a violation of migration legislation, late registration of documents for residence in the EU, or the commission of offenses.
