Alexander Dmitriev, Deputy Chief physician of the Moscow Regional Clinical Narcological Dispensary, told which methods will help to quit smoking.

In an interview with Radio 1 on Thursday, May 28, the expert noted that only a small number of people manage to quit smoking on their own — about 5%. He recommended that in case of difficulties, do not hesitate to seek help from doctors, starting with a visit to a narcologist, and stressed that treatment in public institutions is free of charge.

According to him, at the first appointment, the specialist conducts an examination, including a survey and assessment of the degree of nicotine addiction using the Fagerstrom test.

The expert said that nicotine replacement therapy, cognitive behavioral techniques and motivational counseling are used in the treatment, and the full course can take from six months to a year. He added that disruptions are possible and should not become a reason to give up trying, while it is important to keep in touch with the attending physician.

In early May, the chief freelance specialist of the Ministry of Health of the Moscow region, Vitaly Holdin, told how many years of life nicotine steals. The expert noted that smoking accelerates the aging of the body and significantly shortens life. According to him, signs of aging in smokers may appear 10-20 years earlier than in non-smokers of the same age.
