The development of artificial intelligence can change the classical format of theses in Russian universities and strengthen the role of oral defense. Testing the student's ability to argue his position in a lively discussion will allow for a more accurate assessment of his real knowledge and separate independent work from texts created by neural networks. All the details are in the Izvestia article.

New certification formats

Valery Falkov, Minister of Science and Higher Education, said that the development of AI technologies calls into question the classic format of theses. In an environment where educational texts are generated by bots in a few hours, universities will shift towards testing the student's ability to argue his position in a lively discussion.

Alexander Tolmachev, Deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Youth Policy, noted that oral defense helps to separate conscientious students from those who turned to the help of neural networks on the last night. In his opinion, during face-to-face communication, one can evaluate the skills of analysis and planning that the algorithm will not teach.

"It is much more important to understand the essence of the discipline — the neural network will not teach this," he noted.

The risks of using technology

Nikita Prokhorov, an IT entrepreneur and expert on digital reputation and AI, stressed that students often transfer personal data and research fragments to public neural networks without thinking about security. He believes that universities should not ban technology, but introduce disciplines to work with it, teaching fact-checking and information protection.

"It is pointless to fight AI by introducing various prohibitions. Neural networks have already become the same basic technology as search engines or calculators once were," Prokhorov noted.

The transformation of theses

Maria Todorova, a child psychologist and specialist in child development and education, recalled that diplomas have historically served as a bridge to independent activity, confirming the graduate's qualifications through in-depth research on the topic. The tradition of writing final qualifying papers has been developing for decades as the main way to confirm knowledge, but now their creation often loses its meaning due to AI.

"If a student honestly admits at what stages and exactly how he used AI, it is easier to assess the contribution of neural networks and the student's contribution. That is, to streamline their use, since in modern life it is necessary both at home and at work. At the same time, introduce mandatory "percentages", that is, strengthen control over the writing process so that the head sees the main stages," Todorova said.

According to the psychologist, the organization of a high-quality oral assessment will require significant resources. To ensure objectivity, a commission of several people and practical tasks are needed, which would change annually to test the resourcefulness and innovative thinking of graduates.
