- Gymnast Nemov noted the readiness of athletes from the Russian Federation to achieve success by the Olympic Games-2028
Four-time Olympic champion in artistic gymnastics Alexei Nemov is confident that Russian athletes will be able to regain their authority in international sports in the next year and a half after being banned from participating in competitions with the flag and anthem of the Russian Federation. The athlete announced this in an interview with Izvestia on May 28.
"I am glad to hear this news that we now have the opportunity to compete in international competitions with our rivals, colleagues, and friends," the gymnast said.
According to Nemov, now Russian athletes will have to earn respect on the world stage again on the eve of the Summer Olympic Games, which are scheduled to take place in 2028. He expressed confidence that the Russian national team will cope with this task.
The gymnast stressed that the first step has already been taken.: A number of international sports federations have lifted restrictions on the participation of athletes from Russia.
The interview is timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Olympic champion.
The European Gymnastics Union, as it became known on May 24, allowed Russian rhythmic gymnasts to compete under the national flag at the European Championships held in Bulgaria.
On May 18, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) allowed Russian athletes to participate in international tournaments with a flag and anthem. The solution applies to athletic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline jumping, athletic acrobatics, and athletic aerobics.
Anna Pavlova, a Russian and Azerbaijani gymnast, two-time Olympic bronze medalist and Honored Master of Sports of Russia, noted that allowing gymnasts from Russia to compete with the flag and anthem would have a positive impact on their performances. According to her, the restrictions impose a certain burden on athletes — the lack of full support from the audience and the not very good attitude of colleagues make it difficult to achieve high results.
