- The FSB has published documents about the feat of the border guards in the early days of the Second World War
On the occasion of Border Guard Day on May 28, the Federal Security Service spoke about the work of Soviet border guards in the early days of the Great Patriotic War (WWII).
One of the heroic border guards was Andrei Mitrofanovich Kizhevatov, who headed one of the sections of the border outpost passing through the territory of the Brest Fortress.
"On June 22, 1941, Kizhevatov, along with his subordinates, engaged in an unequal battle with the Nazi invaders. The 9th border outpost was in the direction of the enemy's main attack and was subjected to a particularly powerful artillery attack and aerial bombing. The outpost building was destroyed, and the weapons storage rooms were littered with debris. There were many dead and wounded in the squad," the publication says.
In an extremely difficult situation, Kizhevatov was able to organize the defense of the outpost, which later turned into an important node for the defense of the Brest fortress in the area of the Terespol Gate. According to eyewitnesses, the head of the outpost was seen in the most dangerous, crucial places, he was in the forefront of the attacking fighters at the head of his border guards.
Kizhevatov was wounded several times, but continued to be in the ranks and cheer on his colleagues.
"The Hitlerite command, amazed by the unprecedented steadfastness of the border guards, in the first days of the war issued an order not to take the soldiers in green caps prisoners," the FSB publication says.
On the eve of Victory Day celebrations, the FSB Directorate for the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol on May 7 published a set of declassified documents from the Central Archive of the FSB dedicated to the work of the Soviet special services on the Crimean Peninsula during the Great Patriotic War (WWII). In particular, photographs of victims of mass shootings near Kerch were published, which, according to the agency, were used as evidence of war crimes at the Nuremberg trials.
