Every year on May 29, Orthodox believers honor the memory of St. Theodore the Consecrated, one of the famous representatives of early monasticism. In the national calendar, the date was named "Fedor Zhitnik". In 2026, the holiday falls on a Friday. Read about its history, traditions, signs and strict prohibitions in the Izvestia article.

What is the church holiday on May 29th?

Theodore the Consecrated was born around 316 in Egypt into a wealthy Christian family. Already in his youth, he chose a spiritual path — at the age of 14 he secretly left his parents' home and settled in a monastery, abandoning his usual life.

Later, Theodore heard about St. Pachomius the Great, the founder of the Cenobitic monasticism, and went to the Tavenisi monastery to become his disciple. In the monastery, he quickly proved himself to be a strict and obedient monk, did not argue with his mentor, helped the brethren, and was distinguished by a spiritual humility rare for his age.

One day, Theodore complained to Pachomius of a severe headache. The mentor replied that bodily infirmities should be endured patiently, without unnecessary complaints, if the disease does not require immediate help. The young monk took these words as a lesson in monastic self-control. According to legend, the pain tormented him for many years, but the brethren never heard complaints from him again.

When Theodore was about 20 years old, Pachomius instructed him to deliver a sermon to the monks. Some of the older brothers were unhappy that they were being instructed by a young monk, but Theodore carried out the task calmly, considering the Abba's will to be the law.

Later, Pachomius appointed Theodore the builder of the Tavenisi monastery. He received the nickname Sanctified because he was the first to be ordained a priest in his monastery. After the death of Pachomius, Theodore became one of the main leaders of the Thebaid monasteries and continued to strengthen the monastic community created by his mentor.

In the hagiographic tradition, Theodore the Consecrated is known not only as an experienced mentor, but also as a miracle worker. His gift was associated with fidelity to Christian teaching, humility, and a strict monastic life. People turned to the monk for help and advice, and his contemporaries saw in him a man of great spiritual strength. The monk died in 368.

Traditions of the national holiday Fedor Zhitnik on May 29

In Russia, the name of the monk was transformed from Theodore to the more familiar — Fedor. The popular name of the holiday "Fedor the Breadbasket" was associated with the life. Zhito in the vernacular meant not only rye, but also other cereals, grain, crops, bread in general, so the name of the holiday directly referred to the main concern of the peasant year — whether there would be grain, whether there would be enough flour, whether the family would survive the next cold season unnecessarily.

In the morning, the men went to the field, checked the crops, plowed the earth, completed work with barley.

"The Granary cares about burying the barley field," they said.

The housewives always cooked porridge for Fedor the Breadbasket — barley, buckwheat, millet or any other. If supplies allowed, butter, milk or sour cream were added to the treat. Such a dish in Russia symbolized prosperity — the grain on the table meant the hope of full barns in the fall.

A separate portion of porridge was left in a secluded place for the brownie to maintain its location. The ancestors believed that a well-fed and contented spirit would look after the hut, cattle and owners all year round. Otherwise, he may take offense and leave the family without protection.

The women were picking rowan blossoms on this day. It was dried in the shade, stored in pouches, then added to tea or used in medicinal decoctions.

Since Fyodor Zhitnik in Russia, they started wedding chores. After the end of the main spring winter, there was more time in the villages for family arrangements, viewing, dowry preparation and discussion of future weddings. There was a belief that the preparations started on May 29th would be easier, and the marriage would be stronger.

What not to do on the Fedor Zhitnik holiday

The ancestors of Fyodor Zhitnik observed a number of strict prohibitions in order to avoid discord in family life. On this day, it was not necessary to entrust the groom's mother with the choice of the bride's wedding outfit or the towel on which the young people should stand. According to legend, this could provoke protracted quarrels between the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law.

What else you can't do on May 29th:

  • Taking wedding rings from relatives will bring deception and distrust to the new family.;
  • to buy identical dresses for bridesmaids — a young family may face adultery;
  • braiding the braids of marriageable girls can "confuse" the way to the groom;
  • to wear red clothes to girls who dream of marriage — a bright color will scare away matchmakers;
  • leaving half—eaten food on the table leads to poverty and a life of "leftovers";
  • using spoons unnecessarily and carelessly handling dishes can become a bait for domestic troubles.;
  • start cleaning the house, if the work in the garden or field is not finished, the harvest will be weak.

Folk signs for May 29
