- Shoigu pointed out the unacceptability of the US and NATO military presence in Afghanistan.
Russia considers the deployment of Western military infrastructure in Afghanistan unacceptable and insists on post-conflict reconstruction of infrastructure in the country. This was announced on May 27 by the Secretary of the Russian Security Council, Sergei Shoigu.
"We proceed from the unacceptability, both for us and for our Afghan friends, of the deployment of military infrastructure and military facilities of the United States of America and NATO on the territory of Afghanistan or neighboring states under any pretext," he said at a meeting with Afghan Defense Minister Mohammad Yakub during the International Security Forum.
Shoigu also added that Western countries should take responsibility for rebuilding Afghanistan's infrastructure after almost 20 years of presence there, as well as unfreeze state assets.
The Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, said on May 25 that the mandate of the UN mission to assist the country should be extended, but certain questions remain about the structure's activities at the current stage. He also touched upon the humanitarian crisis in the country, stressing that the international community needs to move from declarations to real actions.
