Doctors talked about the effect of handwriting on human cognitive functions
A change in handwriting may be not just a result of fatigue or a rare practice of handwriting, but an early signal of neurological disorders. In addition, the abandonment of manual writing in favor of gadgets gradually reduces the cognitive load on the brain and affects memory, attention and coordination. All the details are in the Izvestia article.
The connection between writing and brain function
Handwriting is a complex neuropsychological process involving different areas of the brain. The frontal lobes are responsible for planning and control, the parietal lobes for coordination, and the temporal lobes are associated with memory and speech. The cerebellum and basal ganglia also play an important role in ensuring the accuracy of movements.
Neuropsychologist Maria Todorova noted that today people have become much less likely to use manual writing, preferring the keyboards of gadgets. In her opinion, writing by hand is an excellent exercise and support for the brain, so it is recommended to write manually whenever possible.
"People with chronic depression or even mental disabilities can have beautiful, beautiful handwriting, and most often their problems have nothing to do with how their cognitive functions work," the expert noted.
Symptoms of neurological disorders
One of the most characteristic signs of Parkinson's disease is micrography, in which letters become small and lines shrink. Handwriting deterioration can also be observed in Alzheimer's disease, the effects of stroke, multiple sclerosis, and vascular disorders. A quick change in the usual writing style for no apparent reason should alert you.
Ekaterina Demyanovskaya, a neurologist, candidate of medical Sciences, and expert doctor at the Hemotest Laboratory, pointed out specific warning signs, such as slowing down writing and the appearance of trembling lines.
"One of the early signs of neurological disorders may be slow writing, shaky or broken lines, a decrease in letter size, loss of line evenness, difficulty connecting letters to each other. Sometimes a person starts correcting words more often, skipping letters, or writing less legibly than before," the expert explained.
The influence of external factors on writing
Writing quality may temporarily decrease due to stress, fatigue, or lack of sleep, but in such cases, handwriting usually recovers after rest. In children, the situation is complicated by the lack of constant exercise and excessive use of gadgets, which leads to an increase in cases of dyslexia and dysgraphia.
Experts recommend using dictation tests to detect problems early. As Ekaterina Demyanovskaya explained, during dictation, the brain performs complex work.
"During dictation, the brain performs several tasks at once: perceives speech, holds it in working memory, converts it into written form, and controls hand movements. That is why such tasks help to notice violations of attention, information processing speed and executive functions earlier," the doctor said.
