An opposition rally was held in Tbilisi on Georgia's Independence Day
On the Independence Day of Georgia, an opposition rally was held in the center of Tbilisi. This was reported to Izvestia on May 26 by journalist Giorgi Jabishvili from the scene.
The protesters marched from Tbilisi State University to the Parliament building, completely blocking Rustaveli Avenue. Car traffic on the street was paralyzed.
Many protesters came out with flags of Georgia, the European Union and the United States. The leaders of the radical opposition address them from an improvised stage, shouting speeches without microphones. The procession is accompanied by loud music.
"One of the leaders stated that [US Secretary of State] Marco Rubio, who is on a working visit to Yerevan today, should have been here in Tbilisi and supported the radical opposition," the journalist reported.
The last large-scale rally in Tbilisi was held on November 27 last year. Under the flags of the European Union, the protesters tried to get the government to resign. Jabishvili added that the protesters gathered to mark the anniversary of the riots they staged last year. Then they practically destroyed the entire avenue and staged constant clashes with the special forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia.
