A resident of the Lipetsk region was sentenced for a fatal accident on New Year's Eve.

A court in the Lipetsk region has sentenced a motorist from the Dobrovsky district, who got drunk behind the wheel on New Year's Eve and caused an accident with the dead and injured. This is reported by the regional prosecutor's office.

The accident occurred a little over an hour before the start of 2026 on the Lipetsk– Dobroye–Chaplygin highway. The Nissan Almera car crashed into the Lada Kalina, which was driving along the main road.

It was established that the 26-year-old Nissan driver got behind the wheel intoxicated to get to a liquor store. Leaving for the highway after shopping, he did not give way to the Lada Kalina, in which a family of four was traveling.

As a result of the collision, the 44-year-old Lada driver was killed, three of his passengers, including an 11-year-old child, were injured, GOROD48 writes. A passenger of a foreign car was also injured in the accident.

"The result of a gross traffic violation by a young man was a car collision that resulted in the death of the 44-year-old head of the family and serious injury to the health of his 41-year—old wife and 20-year-old daughter," the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

The court found the motorist guilty under paragraph "a" of Part 4 of Article 264 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Violation of traffic rules that negligently caused the death of a person committed by a person in a state of intoxication") and sentenced him to six years in prison to be served in a penal colony and deprivation of a driver's license for two years. At the same time, the prosecutor's office notes that the driver did not admit his guilt.

Earlier in May, the Gryazinsky city Court of the Lipetsk region sentenced another driver of a Nissan Almera car for an accident with the dead. The man exceeded the speed limit and lost control, the car overturned. Two passengers of the car were killed, two more were hospitalized.
