The expert compared holidays in Sochi and Abkhazia in the summer of 2026
Sochi and Abkhazia are once again among the most popular destinations among Russians for the summer of 2026. Despite the proximity of the resorts and the similar climate, tourists are increasingly choosing between two completely different vacation scenarios — a developed infrastructure and an active life, or tranquility, nature and more affordable prices. Oksana Vlasenko, an expert at the OnlineTours package tour booking service, told Izvestia about the differences in destinations on May 28.
According to her, both directions combine the subtropical climate, mountains and pebble beaches of the Black Sea, but the differences become noticeable at the first comparison. Sochi offers tourists a modern infrastructure, Olympic facilities, a large number of restaurants, parks and entertainment, while Abkhazia relies on natural landscapes, a calmer rhythm of rest and budget.
"Tourists call the purity of the sea one of the main advantages of Abkhazia. This is especially noticeable in Pitsunda and Gagra, where the water remains clear even in high season due to the absence of large ports and dense buildings along the coast. In Sochi, especially in the Adler and Imereti lowlands, the situation depends on the weather and the tourist load: after storms, the water can get cloudy, and in summer the beaches turn out to be crowded," the specialist explained.
Vlasenko noted that Abkhazia remains one of the most accessible foreign destinations for Russians. The average cost of living here in the summer of 2026 starts from about 3 thousand rubles per night, while in Sochi similar options will cost at least 4.5 thousand rubles. Meals are also cheaper: lunch in a cafe in Abkhazia costs about 500 rubles per person, in Sochi — from 700 rubles and above. At the same time, tourists are advised to prepare cash in advance, since bank cards are not accepted everywhere.
The expert added that tourists are paying special attention to transport accessibility in 2026. After the launch of direct flights to Sukhum, trips to Abkhazia have become much more convenient: travelers no longer need to spend hours crossing the border during high season. In Sochi, traffic jams remain the main problem: the resort stretches along the coast for almost 145 km, so the road between the districts can take several hours in summer.
According to Vlasenko, the formats of leisure are very different. Sochi is focused on active recreation: tourists are attracted by the Olympic Park, Krasnaya Polyana, amusement parks, restaurants and a busy evening life. In Abkhazia, the main points of attraction are nature and sightseeing routes — Lake Ritsa, Novoafon cave, thermal springs and mountain gorges.
At the same time, the specialist warned that both directions have their own peculiarities. In Sochi, tourists may be confused by high humidity and a large number of tourists during the peak season. In Abkhazia, the infrastructure is still inferior to the Russian resort: power outages are possible, the choice of evening entertainment is limited, and the level of service in different accommodation facilities may vary markedly.
According to Vlasenko, the choice between Sochi and Abkhazia in 2026 depends primarily on the expectations of tourists. Adler is more suitable for those who appreciate comfort, active life and a wide range of entertainment. Experts advise those who are looking for tranquility, clean sea, nature and the opportunity to save money to pay attention to Abkhazia.
