Mexico has agreed to host the Iranian national team for the 2026 World Cup.
Mexico is ready to host the Iranian national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as the US authorities do not allow the team to reside on their territory. This was announced on May 25 by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum during a press conference.
"We were asked if we would agree for them to spend the night in Mexico, and we replied: yes, no problem, we have no objections," The Guardian newspaper quoted her as saying.
According to the head of state, representatives of the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) have notified the Mexican side that Iran will host three group stage matches in the United States. At the same time, the American side refused to give the team the opportunity to stay overnight in the country.
Sheinbaum clarified that the option of accommodating Iranian football players in Tijuana is currently being considered. From this border city, athletes will be able to fly to the games in the United States.
"We see no reason to deny them the opportunity to stay in Mexico," the president stressed.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 3.
On May 16, Reuters reported that FIFA Secretary General Matthias Grafstrom will hold a meeting in Istanbul with representatives of the Iranian Football Federation on the participation of the national team in the World Cup. In the group stage, Iran's national team is scheduled to play against New Zealand and Belgium in Inglewood, California, and also face Egypt in Seattle.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced at the organization's congress in Vancouver, Canada, on April 30 that the Iranian national football team will participate in the 2026 World Cup and will play its matches in the United States.
