The US State Department declared Washington's commitment to the NPT

The United States remains committed to the Treaty on the Non—Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and its three pillars - disarmament, non-proliferation, and the peaceful uses of the atom. This was announced on May 24 by Thomas Pigott, a representative of the US State Department, after the conclusion of the 2026 NPT Review Conference.

"The United States regrets that the countries participating in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons were unable to reach consensus on the final document," Pigott's text, published on the official website of the State Department, follows.

The representative stressed that the inability of some countries to take the threats posed by Iran seriously would be taken into account in further U.S. engagement. According to him, Washington remains firmly committed to the NPT and its three basic principles.

Pigott added that the failure to reach consensus is disappointing given Iran's continued non-compliance with the terms of the safeguards agreement with the IAEA and the escalation of its nuclear program without a convincing civil justification.

Nuclear gambit: NPT participants gather at a conference in New York

The meeting may end without a final document for the third time in a row.

Mohsen Rezaei, the military adviser to the supreme leader of Iran, said on May 24 that Iran may withdraw from the NPT if the threats and aggressive actions from the United States continue. Rezai noted that in case of further increased pressure, Iran may take retaliatory measures, including breaking the naval blockade.

Andrei Belousov, Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and head of the Russian delegation to the NPT Review Conference, said on May 5 that relations between the nuclear-weapon states are currently in a depressing state. Belousov added that concerns about the aggravation of strategic risks and an increase in the level of nuclear danger are "well-founded."
