A fighter of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation announced that the militants had mistaken the Armed Forces of Ukraine for their Russian military personnel

A group of Ukrainian militants in the village of Verkhnyaya Tersa in the Zaporizhia region mistook Russian soldiers for their own and allowed them to enter their positions. This was announced on May 23 by an attack aircraft of the 155th regiment of the 55th Marine Division of the Vostok group of forces with the call sign Bes.

"We come up in the morning and knock. They just tell us to come in. They thought their own people had come. We go in, we immediately [took out] the machine guns, [we say] "hands up." They didn't even want to resist, they just raised their hands. They say, "Guys, we don't want anything." After about 15-20 minutes of talking to them, I felt sorry for them in a purely human way, because they had no cigarettes, no food. They surrendered," he told TASS.
