Lieutenant General Marzoev spoke about his pride in his son and his deed.
The commander of the 18th Army of the Southern Military District, Lieutenant General Arkady Marzoev, accepted from the hands of Russian President Vladimir Putin the Hero of Russia star, awarded posthumously to his son, Guard Lieutenant Vasily Marzoev, for courage and heroism. In a conversation with a correspondent of Izvestia on May 21, he expressed confidence that his son could not have done anything else.
"I'm proud of my son, I'm proud of how I raised him, and he did everything right. It hurts to say this, but there was no other way he could have done it. <...> He was a graduate of the Tver Suvorov Military School, a graduate of the Moscow Combined Arms Command School, from which he graduated with a gold medal. He was a very purposeful guy, he was very proud to be the successor of the officer dynasty," Marzoev explained.
After the award ceremony, Putin had a private conversation with the Lieutenant General. Marzoev noted that the conversation was very personal and the President's participation deeply touched him.
"I can say that with his workload and the tasks that lie on his shoulders, it's worth a lot to worry about people like this, to be interested in people. Therefore, we can be grateful that we have such a president," he concluded.
Putin announced in the Kremlin on the same day that Vasily Marzoev and Alexander Ryazanov had been posthumously awarded the title of Heroes of Russia.
Vasily Marzoev died while performing combat missions in the area of the village of Plavni in the Zaporizhia direction, where the enemy struck with a guided aerial bomb. Being the commander of a reconnaissance platoon, Marzoev managed to save the lives of two subordinates, dragging them to a safe distance, and returned for the third wounded man — at that time, the enemy struck again, which ended his life.
