CBS News reported that the United States is preparing new charges against Maduro.
The U.S. Attorney's office is preparing new charges against detained Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro due to concerns that the current prosecution is not effective enough. This was reported on May 19 by the CBS News channel, citing sources.
"The Miami Federal Prosecutor's Office has been ordered to launch a new criminal investigation into detained former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro amid concerns," the publication says.
According to the TV channel, the new investigation began after the deportation to the United States of Maduro's close business partner and former Minister of Industry and National Production of Venezuela, Alex Saab.
It is clarified that Saab is accused of alleged involvement in a money laundering scheme allegedly linked to the Venezuelan state food program.
The son of the president of Venezuela, a member of parliament, Nicolas Ernesto Maduro Guerra, announced on May 14 that his father, who is in a US prison, is being held in an overcrowded cell along with 18 other prisoners. According to him, the Venezuelan leader is gradually learning English, communicating with his cellmates.
The ABC broadcasting network reported on March 12 that Maduro was being held in a Brooklyn prison detention center. In January, after Maduro's detention, the U.S. Department of Justice also announced charges not only against the politician and his wife, but also against their son.
