- Former Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero was summoned to court in the case of the airline Plus Ultra
Former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has been subpoenaed as a suspect in a corruption case involving financial assistance to Plus Ultra Airlines. This was reported on May 19 by Bloomberg, citing a statement from a representative of the country's National Court.
It is noted that Zapatero is currently being investigated for the potential illegal use of €53 million allocated by the state for Plus Ultra. This money was allocated to support strategic enterprises after the pandemic.
Zapatero, who served as prime minister from 2004 to 2011, is suspected of influence peddling. He is scheduled to appear in court to testify on June 2. The court also ordered a search of the office of the former Prime Minister and three related commercial companies.
Shortly before that, on April 13, charges of influence peddling and bribery were also brought against the wife of the current Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Bogonia Gomez. Some time later, on April 30, she attacked a journalist because she received a question about corruption.
