Politico has learned about Hungary's plans to begin negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU

Budapest may soon give the go-ahead to start negotiations on Ukraine's admission to the European Union (EU). This was reported by the Politico newspaper on May 18, citing European diplomats.

It is noted that Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orban held telephone talks with her Ukrainian counterpart Andrei Sibiga the day before. On the same day, the parties announced the launch of consultations on the restoration of the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia.

"Hungary's move to start negotiations with Ukraine on the rights of Hungarian minorities is a signal that Budapest is likely to support the start of official negotiations on Kiev's accession to the EU in the coming weeks," the newspaper writes.

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar said yesterday that Ukraine must fulfill 11 Budapest conditions regarding the restoration of the rights of Hungarians in Transcarpathia in order to join the EU. He also noted that he had received a message about the readiness of the Government of Ukraine to start negotiations as soon as possible.

Politico reported on April 30 that representatives of the EU countries, who rejected the plan to accelerate Ukraine's admission to the union, plan to offer it a reduced integration instead. In parallel, Ukraine is required to carry out the work and transformations necessary for a full-fledged entry.
