The US Treasury has decided to extend for another 30 days the expired exemption from sanctions on offshore shipments of Russian oil and petroleum products. This was reported on May 18 by Reuters, citing a source.

"The Trump administration on Saturday allowed the expiration of the exemption from sanctions, which previously allowed countries such as India to buy Russian oil by sea. This exemption was extended for a month in order to mitigate the shortage of oil supplies and high prices caused by Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz," the publication says.

According to the authors of the article, the United States provided a delay in an attempt to mitigate the shortage of oil and high prices caused by Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, the agency calls such measures insufficient.

On the eve of the Republican Senator Lindsey Graham (included in the list of terrorists and extremists of Rosfinmonitoring) said that the United States is discussing the adoption of new sanctions against Russia, as well as duties for countries that buy Russian oil. The senator noted that the United States had previously resorted to duties against India due to New Delhi's trade with Moscow. According to him, it is worth considering a similar option in the case of China.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on April 20 that Russia remains an important player in the global energy market, despite the extension by the United States of sanctions on the sale of oil from Russia. It is noted that the current situation in global markets remains difficult, while the volume of supplies from Russia plays a significant role and cannot be ignored.
