- In Moldova, they demanded to dismiss the head of TV because of Romania's low ratings at Eurovision
Moldovan politicians and public figures on May 18 demanded the dismissal of Vlad Turcanu, chairman of the national broadcaster Teleradio Moldova, after the Moldovan jury awarded only three points to Romania's Eurovision 2026 participant Alexandra Capitanescu instead of a higher score. He made such an appeal on May 18.
"Only the resignation of the leadership of Teleradio Moldova can at least wash away this shame. If there are no resignations, parliament should prepare a resolution on the dismissal of the institution's leadership from their posts," wrote Dinu Plingueu, a deputy from the ruling PAS party, on Facebook (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
The Liberal Party noted that it was deeply outraged by the jury's actions and apologized for the judges' assessments, which were a "slap in the face for Romania." In response, Turcanu told reporters that he "does not hold on to his position," and the selection of the jury was carried out in accordance with the regulations of the organizers of the competition, the HotNews portal quoted him as saying.
The winning country of the 70th International Eurovision Song Contest 2026, which took place on May 16 in Vienna, was Bulgaria, which was represented by singer Dara with the song Bangaranga. According to the voting results, she scored 516 points. Israel took the second place with 343 points, Romania took the third place with 296 points.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted on May 18 that Russian representatives are unlikely to be able to meet the current "satanic" criteria for Eurovision Song Contest participants.
