Maintaining brain health can reduce the impact of Alzheimer's disease on memory and cognitive function, scientists at Murdoch University and AdventHealth Medical Center have concluded. This was reported on May 15 in the journal Medical Xpress.

The study included more than 600 Americans between the ages of 65 and 80 who lived independently and had no diagnosed memory impairments or signs of dementia. Using blood tests and MRI scans, the researchers assessed early pathological changes characteristic of Alzheimer's disease, as well as conducted cognitive tests for attention, working memory, information processing speed, and executive functions. Additionally, social factors were taken into account — the level of education, income and financial stability of the participants.

"Our main conclusion is that maintaining good overall brain health can reduce the impact of Alzheimer's—related changes on cognitive function," explained the study's lead author, Dr. Kelsey Sewell of Murdoch University.

The study also showed that people with higher socio-economic status may be less susceptible to the effects of the disease on memory. However, more research is needed to confirm this connection.

"Understanding these protective factors will help us develop earlier and more targeted strategies to minimize the effects of the disease on memory and thinking," Sewell added.

According to the researcher, in order to maintain brain health, it is necessary to lead an active lifestyle: exercise regularly, follow a healthy diet, sleep normally, and set new intellectual goals.

Fuad Seifullayev, lecturer at the Department of Surgical Diseases at Synergy University, Maxillofacial surgeon, spoke about the prevention of Alzheimer's disease on May 12. According to him, the disease begins to develop long before the first symptoms appear. The specialist emphasized that prevention includes regular physical activity, weight and blood pressure control, sleep normalization and active socialization.
